[Hhh] Next NRHHH Run May 4th 2015 - Star Wars Day!

Hi Hashers

Next Run (no 1554)
When - Monday 4th May 2015 at 6pm - STARS WARS DAY - wear something STAR WARS-ish
Where -  Northern Rivers Hotel, 72 Bridge Street, South Lismore
Hare - Slurrr (Fay)

Last Run (no 1553)
When -Monday 27th April 2015 at 6pm
Where -  15 South Street, Alstonville
Hare - Miss Took (Rosi)

A mild and star-filled night (astral stars - not celebrity ones). The weather was obviously inspirational as everyone was early and, after a short briefing by Hare Miss Took, the runners led by Procol raced off in one direction and the walkers strode off in the other. Clutching a map, thoughtfully provided by Miss Took, Goanna led the gaggle of walkers down the road through the deep dark night. Being deep and dark, the night kept the walkers together as they meandered along pathways and down snickets, being passed a couple of times by the runners. Slurrrrr and Di led from the front as a rapid pace was set up, which became even more rapid when Teven Road was reached. Scrambled Eggs, being a wise old bird, took a shortcut On Home at this point whilst the walkers, briefly re-united with the runners, then weaved through a reserve and night-black streets. Passing Coles, Slurrrrrrr was able to obtain some much needed retail therapy, then On Home.

The large pack filled the Hares deck and (sort of) settled down when Upcycler called a Circle.

Hootu was asked to speak about the walk and, as usual, gave a virtual step-by-step description that took almost as long as the walk itself. He said there were two highlights on the walk and noted that, as it was Miss Took's first attempt at setting a hash trail, he had set out wondering "how would she do?" He was pleased to report that she had done very well. He found the walk very intuitive and, being Miss Took's first trail, a shared experience. His comment that the arrows appeared slightly faded was (politely) howled down. Hootu had also paused for a pee along the trail and was happy to note that the new hash tee shirts did not give him 'nipple rash'. He certainly sounded to have had a jolly time, although which were his 'two highlights' remained uncertain.

Twiggy spoke about the run. He said it was apparently flat, with only one hill, but his lack of fitness made it all seem uphill. He found running at night quite a new experience, particularly as he had not brought a torch, which at times made it a most interesting experience. However, despite being unfit and stumbling around in the dark unable to see any arrows, he had obviously enjoyed the run.

Down Downs were given to:
Miss Took - Hare for an excellent 'Virgin Trail'
Auntie Lush - Birthday Girl and also for stunning success in the Australia-wide Toastmasters competition. Congratulations!
Dame Edna - Also Birthday Girl - Congratulations!

Miss Took's Mum then delighted the hash with her story of 'An Italian in Malta', delivered in an authentic accent and spiked with innuendo. A wonderfully ribald 'story'. The table was then loaded with a glorious meal of tacos, that saw the return to the table for many refills by many hashers.

Many Thanks to 'Virgin Trail' Hare Miss Took for a great trail, hosting the hash and tremendous tacos on an excellent hash night.

[Hhh] Next HRHHH Run 27th April 2015

Hi Hashers

Next Run (no 1553)
When - Monday 27th April 2015 at 6pm
Where -  15 South Street, Alstonville
Hare - Miss Took (Rosi)

Last Run (no 1552)
When -Monday 20th April 2015 at 6pm
Where -  60 Mountain View Drive (off Bruxner Crescent), Goonellabah
Hare - Bituman (Patrick)

Note : WINTER CAMP - 2nd and 3rd May 2015 at the Clarence Gorge (www.theclarencegorge.com) Contact Slurr on 0401 566 506 or doaf@ycw.com.au if you are thinking of going -  ASAP

After a day of miserable wet and cold weather, the skies cleared to a beautiful autumn evening. Well, not quite, but the rain did ease off to just a drizzle. Undeterred, a hardy group of hashers gathered at Hare Bituman's abode. After a few preliminary instructions, that no one really listened to, Bituman led off the runners and, armed with a map, Slurrrr led off the walkers. Much consideration had been given to the appropriate attire for such a drizzly night. Most of the runners all loped off wearing singlets whilst, for the walkers, flouro rain jackets or umbrellas seemed the attire of choice.

It was very atmospheric wandering the mist shrouded slopes of Goonellabah in drizzling rain. Walking at a brisk pace, it was not too cold. Goanna soon followed by Tea Bag, who was wearing the 250th Run jacket, turned for Home after a couple of hills. Hash Brown, who recently celebrated his 41st Wedding anniversary, nearly did not make his 42nd as, at one point, he paused on a busy road to expand upon an item of topical news that he felt passionate about. Retread, who felt passionate about making sure he was around for their 42nd anniversary, quickly moved him onto the safety of the pavement.

Marching along the main Ballina road, the walkers were overtaken by the runners. Upcycler 'tagged' Hash Brown, who then ran off. Apparently they were on a 'tag' run. Polarised seemed to be on a run of her own, as she ran off in a totally different direction to everyone else. Losing the runners, the walkers found themselves wandering around Goonellabah Oval, before they gave up and headed On Home. Helen became really excited about walking down a street she had not walked down before. As the hash often goes down streets rarely travelled, we can only hope she does not become overcome with excitement every time she walks down yet another mediocre suburban street.

Back at Bituman's a convivial circle was formed around a table groaning with excellent grub. As even more grub was being brought out, Upcycler called a Circle and asked for comments on the hash.

Procol spoke about the run. He said there were not enough hills (possibly a joke) and that the weather was shocking. Still, it was a well thought out run that had caused Polarised to get lost, fortunately to be rescued by Procol.

Lost With Space spoke about the walk and said she loved the flat walk (possibly another joke) and thought the weather brilliant (definitely a joke). Walking through the drizzle she was only nearly run over a couple of times. A highlight was a tawny frogmouth, perched on a fence at the Goonellabah Oval. The Oval sounded not to have been a highlight, as trail was lost. After wandering around shining torches into the backs of houses, with a pause to look at lots of rabbits, it was On Home.

Down Downs were given to:
Bituman - Hare for a great hash on a weather-challenged night
Tea Bag - for achieving a celebratory 250 Runs. Well Done!
Lost With Space - for finally getting a new car to replace the previously rather mangled one

Mrs Bituman and Bituman then proceeded to serve a sumptuous hash dinner that brought a quiet to the evening as everyone munched away. Although not everyone was quiet, as Upcycler was awarded 'Dummy of the Week' for excessive moaning. The food was really excellent and even Tea Bag's dog had a bowlful to help him celebrate Tea Bag's 250th run.

An excellent night and Many Thanks to Hare Bituman and Mrs Bituman for being such wonderful hosts and serving up a glorious meal.

[Hhh] Next NRHHH Run 20th April 2015

 Hi Hashers

Next Run (no 1552)
When - Monday 20th April 2015 at 6pm
Where -  60 Mountain View Drive (off Bruxner Crescent), Goonellabah
Hare - Bituman (Patrick)

Last Run (no 1551)
When - Monday 13th April 2015 at 6pm
Where -  8 Cooke Avenue, Alstonville
Hare - Scrambled Eggs (Greg)

Note : WINTER CAMP - 2nd and 3rd May 2015 at the Clarence Gorge (www.theclarencegorge.com) Contact Slurr on 0401 566 506 or doaf@ycw.com.au if you are thinking of going -  ASAP

The first hash run in the dark was almost a wet run in the dark, as a rain shower swept past Hare Scrambled Eggs abode, shortly before ON ON. After basic instructions from a barefoot Hare Scrambled Eggs (he obviously was not intending to venture out on such a dark and rain-threatened night), it was time to start hashing. Fortunately the rain had cleared through and a good turn out witnessed a hash run of old (i.e. Polarised running off alone in the wrong direction at the start). Hot on the heels of the already disappeared runners and almost disappearing Polarised, the walkers were promptly led off by Slurrr. A winding trail through the reserve was followed by more winding - this time through the streets of a darkened Alstonville.

In front of the pub, and almost near On HOME, it was decided to extend the planned walk, so Slurrrrr and Retread set off to continue winding around in the dark, happily followed by most of the walkers. The runners were glimpsed a couple of times and finally caught up with as they stopped for a chat at Sally and Huw's residence. There appeared to be much discussion as the quality of the grass in the front of the house and an offer of re-turfing. It was then once more out into the dark and along winding footpaths to Teven Road, then a turn for ON HOME.

The runners and walkers all reached HOME close together, which is always the sign of a good Hash. The walkers were certainly appreciative of the added walk.

Whistles whetted, RA Upcycler called for a Circle.

Plugger spoke about the walk. His description was inspirational and proved to be one of the most uplifting commentaries ever provided on a hash. Regrettably, from the initial word of 'Stunning', no one could quite understand what he was actually saying. In summary, he was saying it was a great walk as it didn't rain and, as it was dark, you could not really see anything.

Kizzme said it was a good run and was her first run since returning from her semester break (something to do with education apparently - lost in the mists of time for most hashers). She said it was a solid run until they stopped for a chat, then a slow plod ON HOME.

Down Downs were given to:
Scrambled Eggs - barefooted Hare for a good hash and - also - Birthday Boy! Congratulations!
Miss Took - for helping the Hare with his catering (her non-hash outrageous footwear will go without mention) and also her late arrival. She was also awarded 'Dummy of the Week' for having a dummy spit at having to do a Down Down.
Hash Brown and Retread - Congratulations on their 41st Wedding Anniversary!
Polarised - Another Wedding Anniversary Congratulations!

Following a great wedding anniversary joke from Hash Jokemaster Bituman, the hash happily stuffed themselves on the Hares hash grub. Many thanks to Hare and Birthday Boy Scrambled Eggs for hosting the hash and also to his assistant Miss Took, who "helped the barefoot chook to cook".

Drink it Down Down....

These feet were hashing nowhere

Congratulations (and to you too Retread!)

[Hhh] Next NRHH Run 13th April 2015

Hi Hashers

Next Run (no 1551)
When - Monday 13th April 2015 at 6pm
Where -  8 Cooke Avenue, Alstonville
Hare - Scrambled Eggs (Greg)

Last Run (no 1550) - Easter Run!
When - Monday 6th April 2015
Where -  Booyong Recreation Reserve, Booyong Road, Booyong
Hares - Goanna and Plugger

Note : WINTER CAMP - 2nd and 3rd May 2015 at the Clarence Gorge (www.theclarencegorge.com) Contact Slurr on 0401 566 506 or doaf@ycw.com.au if you are thinking of going. More details to follow.

A great roll up on a glorious Easter Monday, the wild weather of Easter having gracefully cleared, just in time for NRHHH. The weather was so glorious, quite a number of hashers decided to take a scenic drive towards Nashua, prior to returning to Booyung. With the call of ON ON! the runners ran up towards Booyung junction, hopefully taking the opportunity to admire the abandoned station and sad curve of the deteriorating bridge, before heading back down to the Oval. Hare Goanna directed the already puffing runners, in the opposite direction  towards the bridge over the river. After rather wicked on back,  they realised that it was all something of a wild goose chase and returned to the Booyong Big Scrub reserve, to finally follow the walkers into the tiny remnant of rainforest.

Meanwhile, the walkers were having a delightful amble through the reserve, weaving amidst the tall trees and marveling at the trailing vines and clusters of fungi. As instructed by Hare Goanna, there was lots of looking up at the wonders of the rainforest. Slurrrr and Tea Bag seemed to believe they were in paradise. Lost With Space resisted the urge (only just) to swing on the dangling vines like Jungle Jane (a comic hero, not a hasher). At a brief pause close to the river, Retread and Feel Free displayed their local knowledge of this fascinating piece of rainforest and its historical importance, by pointing out that the famous 'Scrub to Pub' race used to start nearby.

Close to the end of the circuit, the slightly faster ambling runners caught up with the tail of the walkers. Ian (soon to be called something else) and Hash Brown complained about the slow pace. With all the potential trip hazards of vines, roots and twigs, they should have been grateful of the slow pace.

Back at the Oval, Goanna handed out Easter Eggs (of a modest size) and organised (if that is the correct term) the hash into four teams, for a number of Easter Egg games. The first game, an egg and spoon race, passed off quite well, although two hashers seemed to think that the purpose of the game was to actually lay eggs, not carry them on a spoon.

Spoon handovers were carried out with the precision of an Olympic relay race (sort of).

Goanna
's attempt to organise an egg throwing game proved rather difficult. Eggs were thrown with a joyous and wild abandon, as if training for the next anti-CSG mine demonstration. Miss Took, resplendent in her beautiful hash necklace that was brought all the way from Belgium; home of the world's best diamonds (not that her necklace has any diamonds), displayed a catching ability that even the England cricket team would have been embarrassed with. Well, possibly not. Strangely, everyone seemed to be executing a form of Scottish dancing, rather than competing in a serious game.

It was time to stop all this frivolity and get back to the formal nature of hash, by forming a Circle.

Hash Brown spoke about the run. He said that he felt like mother hen, always having to keep a look out for the 'young guns'. Apparently, following Hare Goanna's suggestion to "look up" had not been a good idea, as he kept tripping up. He was also quite confused at the little scrub (the 'wicked' on back).

Feel Free spoke about the walk and said he felt like it was being led by David Attenborough or Harry Butler, as he made his way trough the rainforest. He thought it was very interesting. Miss Took, still dribbling egg stuff from her mis-catch, said she found the walk fascinating and loved the fun guy. After wondering who the 'fun guy' was, it was eventually realised that she meant fungi.

Down Downs were given to:
Goanna and Plugger - Hares for a spectacularly fantabulous run ( I think that is what someone said)
Hash Brown and Lost With Space - for over-zealous and over-achieving egg throwing that had every car owner in deep concern over egg being splattered across their windscreen
Miss Took - for her imaginative, and ultimately unsuccessful, method of egg catching
Ian - bestowed the honourable hash name of Twiggy, due to his propensity to trip over any twig that manifested in his path (and also his glaringly white 'twiggy' legs)

Down Downs sunk, quiches and salad were served up to an appreciative hash. A great way to spend Easter Monday!

[Hhh] Next NRHHH Run 6th April 2015 - Easter Run!

Hi Hashers

Next Run (no 1550)
When - Monday 6th April 2015 at 3pm (note early start)
Where - Booyong Recreation Reserve, Booyong Road, Booyong

Directions - attached. The best way to come from either Lismore or Alstonville is along the Eltham Road.
Bring a chair and if the weather is wet - don't hesitate to give us a ring - Plugger on 0409 768 015

Last Run (no 1549)
When - Monday 30th March 2015 at 6pm
Where -  Shaws Bay Hotel, Ballina
Hare - Runnymead  (Enid)

Much to Hare Runnymead's relief, there was a great turnout for her hash - especially as she had actually set the trail herself. Rain was forecast but a beautiful evening filled the sky, so it seems, fortunately, that the weather bureau got it wrong again. After the Hare's detailed instructions (including advice that there were no on-backs) utilising Feel Free's hand-held hand microphone hand (you had to be there), it was time for ON ON. A loping Hash Brown led off the runners as Runnymead  led off the walkers and, joining the many other evening walkers, runners, cyclists and painfully slow amblers, the hash were soon making their way out to the end of the breakwater. At around the halfway point the walkers met with oncoming runners Impulse and Spin Cycle, as happy running as the rest were walking. After pausing at the end of the breakwater for a photo shot, where Lost With Space appeared to be saluting the mainland and Runnymead carried out a series of neck exercises, it was back down the breakwater and across the sands.

A brisk pace was set by Slurrrr and Headlamps, closely followed by a surprisingly orderly procession of walking hashers. The Hare's carefully constructed beach arrow had been destroyed, but chalk arrows were soon found and a brisk pace was resumed, skirting around the edge of an inlet. At a picnic table, a trio of hashers were enjoying the evening. Dame Edna, Auntie Lush and Kizzme were all happily enjoying 'sundowners' at the water's edge. In search of 'sundowners' the hash strode off to arrive back at the pub where welcome drinks were soon in hand and a long table proved perfect for the hash to congregate and dine around.

A most enjoyable hash on a stunning evening. A well marked trail, that seemed to have forgotten about checks, as well as on-backs - but thoroughly enjoyable all the same. Many thanks to Hare Runnymead for organising the hash and setting an interesting trail.
