Hi Hashers
Sorry but I'm a no show again tonight.  Apologies to the hosts for the late notice.
Also, to Rick and Anna, thanks for the offer of a tent for Hash camp, but I'm now working this weekend so I won't be able to make
it to the camp either.  Anyway, hope to see you all soon.
Cheers

Next Run - (no. 1577)
When - Monday 5th October 2015 at 4 p.m. (Note early start time!)
Where - Rocky Creek Dam, Rocky Creek Road - on the Dunoon Road, between Rosebank and Dunoon. Please ring Goanna 0418 380 526 or Plugger on 0409 768 015 if you are still confused.
Hares - Goanna and Plugger

Last Run - (No. 1576)
When - Monday 21st September 2015
Where - 157 Invercauld Road, Goonellabah
Hares - Auntie Lush (Alison) and Impulse (Garry)

A beautifully warm and sunny afternoon turned into a very chilly and windy evening, much to the surprise of the (now) many under-dressed hashers. Hare Impulse had obviously anticipated the change as he led off the walkers wearing a large storm jacket that would not have looked out of place on the North-West face of Everest. Clutching a map, an equally warmly attired Hash Brown led off the runners. He was wearing a multi-coloured top that celebrated a previous Rugby Union World Cup. Apparently, it is some kind of sport.

Zig-zagging in loops, the hash descended down from the ridge line as a glorious sunset filled the western sky. Quite a few of the walkers were filled with an uneasy trepidation, based upon the 'what goes down, must come up' theory. Denise mentioned the many steep hills around where she lives and hoped the hash were not going to be scaling steep streets to get Home. Fortunately, it was not to be. Hare Impulse held many Hash Halts  to keep the walkers together (for which No More Gaps later thanked him in the Circle) and, with Slurrr and Bingo setting a cracking pace from the front, cleverly followed along contours so that there were not too many steep climbs. However, ascending through one particular reserve proved rather taxing for Miss Took. She prostrated herself on the ground and appeared to be praying to Mecca, although she was pointing more in the direction of Hong Kong.

The runners appeared out of the dark night at one point as, following a stunning full moon, the hash wound a trail On Home. Back on the ridge, some walkers extended the walk, again meeting the runners as they turned for Home on a night of true 'moonshadows'.

On Home, hashers variously wrapped themselves in blankets or warm jackets against a biting wind. Alternative Root was sporting more layers than a Russian Matryoshka doll and still looked cold. Religious Advisor Upcycler quickly called a Circle and opened by asking Denise to talk about the walk. After an initial hesitation, she was almost unstoppable. She spoke about her night of going up and down a lot, including experiencing a bit of Cynthia Wilson. A long grassy slope with a prostrate Miss Took proved enough excitement for the night, so she joined the shortcutting group after that. Hash Brown said the run had six runners and a perfect gender balance. He found it enterprising and, as it was short, no one complained.

Down Downs were awarded to:

Impulse - Hare for a pleasantly un-steep and short hash on a chilly night
Auntie Lush - Co-hare and chief cook
Alternative Root - Birthday Girl - Congratulations!!!
Hash Brown - Birthday Boy - more Congratulations!!!

There then followed an excellent hash joke from Slurrrr, which some, who were having a 'blonde moment' of their own, did not quite understand. Auntie Lush, who appeared to be wearing an Argentina Rugby shirt, then advised on the hash grub arrangements. She announced that hash veggies were being catering for indoors, presumably in the shadows of a closed door room. All the rest were left to feast themselves from tureens of excellent brown rice and a chicken thing, with many second fillings being devoured.

Many Thanks to Auntie Lush and Impulse for hosting the hash from not-so-hilly Invercauld Road.

[nrhhh] Next NRHHH Run 28th September 2015

Next Run - (no. 1575)
When - Monday 21st September 2015 at 6 p.m.
Where - 157 Invercauld Road, Goonellabah
Hares - Auntie Lush (Alison) and Impulse (Garry)

Last Run - (No. 1574)
When - Monday 21st September 2015
Where - 12 Bahama Avenue, Alstonville
Hares - Retread (Alison) and Hash Brown (Pete)

A beautiful Spring evening after a miserably wet weekend. Hash Brown trotted off into the dark with a reasonably large group of runners, closely followed by Retread, leading the walkers. A snappy pace was soon established as the walkers wound around the eerily quiet streets of Alstonville. At one point on the trail, the walkers paused to take the opportunity to view Miss Took's famous trimmed hedge. It was OK as hedges go, with leaves and that sort of stuff, but not the excitement some were expecting. Perhaps their understanding of a trimmed hedge was not one usually found behind a white picket fence. Striding onward, the walkers reached Alstonville CBD (Ha Ha!) where Retread offered a shortcut Home. Enjoying the night, no one took the option and the hash strode on.

Behind the pub, Feel Free and Hug Me spotted a female standing in the deep dark shadows of some trees. They raced off and, with the smoothest of patter, were soon escorting her around the corner - under the watchful eye of the rest of the pack. After this novel episode and delay,
the walkers then shortcut Home, with some shortcutting even more down 'lovers lane'.

Back On Home, everyone spread themselves comfortably around the Hares patio, only to be called to order by Religious Advisor Upcycler. In the Circle, Alternative Root was asked to talk about the walk. She gave a surprisingly detailed analysis of the walk, complete with dramatic gestures (most of the time) that held everyone rapt with attention. Referring to the fast pace, she noted that many were 'puffing and panting' and she watched nervously as Feel Free and Hug Me delivered the woman to her car. A fast getaway, with the hash milling in front of the car, could have caused a certain degree of mayhem. Craig then spoke about the run and delivered a somewhat more modest and dramatically un-dramatic appraisal. Despite taking a shortcut (as noted by Hash Brown), Craig had enjoyed the hash and rated it 'good'.

Down Downs were awarded to:

Hash Brown - Hare for another enjoyable hash around quiet Alstonville
Retread - Co-hare who led the walkers on an appreciated brisk pace
Feel Free and Hug Me - For exceptional gallantry in helping an 'old dear' to her car (when she probably wanted to cross the road in the opposite direction and go to the pub)
Slurrrrr - Birthday Girl - Congratulations
Upcycler - 100 Runs - Well Done!
Spin Cycle - for winning the 10kms run in the Lismore Masters Games

Excellent hash grub followed, which involved many refills of plates. Many Thanks to Retread and Hash Brown for hosting the hash and a great night of Hashing!

Alternative Root at a less-dramatic moment

Spin Cycle appears rather unsure about her Down Down nomination

Down Downs (Retread lost in the dark!)

100 runs Upcycler and 1000+ runs Hash Brown

When - Monday 21st September 2015 at 6 p.m.
Where - 12 Bahama Avenue, Alstonville
Hares - Retread (Alison) and Hash Brown (Pete)

Last Run - (No. 1573)
When - Monday 14th September 2015
Where - 10 Centenary Drive in the Goonellabah Industrial Estate
Hare - Spin Cycle (Sue)

Another great turnout. Whilst waiting for the call of "On On", Hootu, recently returned from a sensational Great Queensland Bike Ride, was offering a feel of his allegedly iron-like thigh muscles, to members of the opposite sex. It is not known if Polarised, who had similarly returned, was making a similar offer. Calling the hashers to order, Hare Spin Cycle advised the hash that two trails were marked. The runners were on white chalk and the walkers on pink.  The Hare had marked specially designed arrows, to avoid any confusion with other arrows. However, in the rapidly fading light it was proving difficult to distinguish one colour from another, so a few difficulties were anticipated....

The runners quickly loped off, followed by the walkers. Auntie Lush had been furnished with a map of the trail but Storm had his own ideas, so the map was passed to Hootu. The first real obstacle was a hillside of squawking plovers that was like passing through an un-nerving scene from Hitchcock's 'The Birds'. Crossing a road, the walkers were led down towards Butterfly Park, although the route was not as marked by the Hare. It did not take long to be off-trail. In the park, the walkers paused at a creek crossing to look for platypus in the half-inch deep water. Unsurprisingly, none were spotted. Still, some hash marks were found, with a check of indeterminate colour near a footbridge. Miss Took appeared confused between the check, a manhole cover and a series of Council marking that denoted cracks that required repair. Fortunately, everyone else understood what was required and the walkers set off following arrows. However, once out of the park, confusion set in and the walkers split into two groups, both happily following what they thought was the trail.

Despite the confusion, the various hash groups enjoyably wound around various streets and made their way Home. One group also looped around the hockey field as Lost With Space is genetically incapable of passing by such fields of dreams (even though
it appeared every ball game apart from hockey was being played). Whilst skirting the hockey field, Draggin' The Chain and No More Gaps discussed the many varied ways they had inadvertently introduced various items of a botanical nature into their undies, after answering the 'call of nature' in a paddock. A vineyard was particularly memorable for No More Gaps. It is only to be hoped that the vines did not have any thorns.

Back On Home, the walkers arrived in two groups, as did the runners. Religious Advisor Upcycler called a Circle and Hash Brown spoke about the run. He declared the 'on-backs' to be fantastic and to have cleverly caught a few of the runners. The run had appeared to be perpetually uphill, with a figure of eight, some cross-country and had been excellent. Some runners had even found time to talk.

Lost With Space spoke about the walk, which was noted as having two distinct groups. Space Cowboy and Saddle Sore interrupted and tried to talk about a peach and white coloured cloud, spotted on the trail, but were quickly howled down. In closing, Lost With Space said the walk had been lovely and really enjoyable.

Down Downs were awarded to:

Spin Cycle - Hare for an enjoyable bi-colour run, that was almost flat - and new shoes
Steve - Co-hare (and chief cook)
Saddle Sore - Birthday Boy! Congratulations!
Impulse - New shoes

Both Spin Cycle and Impulse sportingly downed their 'Down Down' in their new shoes, a long-standing tradition within Hash for anyone who wears new shoes - and one worth remembering!

No More Gaps gave a hilarious rendition in anticipation of the forthcoming Rugby World Cup, which was closely followed by excellent grub, cooked by the Hares on their camping trailer kitchen.

Many Thanks to Spin Cycle and Steve for hosting the On Home from the novel location of their industrial unit and a really enjoyable hash in (almost) flat Goonellabah.

Next Run - (no. 1573)

Hare - Spin Cycle (Sue)

Last Run - (No. 1572)
When - Monday 7th September 2015
Where - 8 Cooke Avenue, Alstonville
Hare - Scrambled Eggs (Greg)

A precocious possum lives on the roof of Hare Scrambled Eggs house. The last time we hashed from here, the possum did a spectacular high wire wobble over the heads of the assembled hash. Not to be outdone, it repeated this feat again. Fortunately, for those gathered beneath, it was a poo-less possum. Entertainment over, Hare Scrambled Eggs sent off the runners before leading off a large group of walkers into the night. After crossing the main road and passing through a reserve, the hash walked the gamut of, fortunately fenced-in, dogs in back yards. They were quite excited at our passing . We were quite relieved to pass by unscathed.

The trail continued to wind around the quiet streets of Alstonville. Hare Scrambled Eggs sometimes gives a local history lesson on trail, but perhaps it was too dark this night. Still, the sight of a tawny frogmouth, balancing on overhead wires, generated keen interest - unlike the passing of the runners from another direction. After passing the back of the pub, the trail made a few more wiggles then headed for Home. Miss Took and Headlamps paused in the deep dark  to admire
Miss Took's recently trimmed hedge. Feel Free, who has never previously displayed interest in anything arboreal or horticultural, declared he was devastated to have missed this wonderful sight.

Home, and settled on the Hare's deck, a Circle was held to review the night's Hash.

Happy Feet said that she had her head down for most of the time, so she did not know much about the run. She recalled there were only a couple of hills, which were a bit high. Her most memorable recollection was a toilet stop at the Showground. Perhaps she needs to get out more. Other than that, she had no idea where she was and 'trusted the boys to get her home'. Hmmm.

Headlamps spoke about the walk which she thought was good, passing through different streets than previous hashes. Like Happy Feet, she too had no idea where she was.

Down Downs were handed to:

Scrambled Eggs - Hare for a possum, raging dogs and Tawny Frogmouth run
Hug Me - Birthday Boy! Congratulations!
Retread - Birthday Girl! More Congratulations!
Space Cowboy - A magnificent 100 runs
Kay - Bestowed the Hash Name of Bingo - welcome to the Hash!
Goanna and Plugger - Awarded their NRHHH 250 mugs (for which they are eternally thankful)

Circle closed, the Hare provided nutritional advice on the food, advising that vegetarians should avoid the meat and gluten-intolerant avoid the bread. He did not say who should avoid the lettuce, but everyone did. By the end of the evening there was a huge bowl of the stuff left.

Many Thanks to Scrambled Eggs for a great night of hashing in the wild and unknown areas of Alstonville; hosting the Hash and serving up solid hash nosh.

[nrhhh] Next NRHHH Run 7th September 2015

Next Run - (no. 1572)
When - Monday 7th September 2015 at 6 p.m.
Where -  8 Cooke Avenue, Alstonville
Hare - Scrambled Eggs (Greg)

Last Run - (No. 1571)
When - Monday 31st August 2015
Where - The Tatts Hotel, 108 Keen St Lismore
Hare - Kizzme (Kate)

Clear skies and a slightly cool evening. Perfect hashing weather for the delights of Lismore. The start was slightly delayed as Hare Kizzme gave instructions for the walkers ("no arrows - but Slurrr knows the trail") and the runners ("trail with a 'pinch' at the end"). Upcycler asked what a 'pinch' was. Apparently a 'pinch' is a steep incline that you really do not want to attempt, but that is where the trail goes. After another short delay awaiting Bituman, whose hash joke was deeply anticipated, the hash was off, with Kizzme leading the runners and Slurrr the walkers.

The walkers soon found themselves stepping out to a brisk pace as they ventured deeper into the deep dark of the night. Whilst most hashers do not take much notice of the Hare's comments, certain hashers, when confronted with an incline, realised they had arrived at the 'pinch'. As it was an incline they had no intention of ascending, they skirted around the edge of the hill, back towards town. Bravely, the rest of the walkers ascended. As there were no runners gasping for air on the slope, it was assumed the runners had already blazed a trail up and over this modest hill.

Back down at street level, the brave walkers and non-ascending walkers were re-united, to walk the quiet city streets back On Home.

Gathering in the back room of Tatts, the hash were quickly called to order by Religious Adviser Upcycler, who asked Bituman to speak about the run. He noted that there were not many runners (only three apparently), but it was a sensational run that included a few 'virgin' streets and, also, as the Hare is an artist, the run had a fascinating artistic flavour. Through a series of loops, the trail wound past the artistic wonders of Lismore including an artwork by Hare Kizzme and the strangely named 'bum-tree'.

Slurrrr spoke about the walk and remarked that the trail had split into two groups; walkers and wimpy walkers. The wimpy walkers had baulked at the 'pinch' and, along with Alternative Root and Draggin' The Chain, had deviated from the hill and chosen an alternative route. Slurrrrr noted that the walkers all kept well together and appeared to relish the hill (which goes to show how deceptive darkness can be). Auntie Lush had an ongoing tussle with Storm throughout the walk. Storm won.

As plates of food were banged down, Down Downs were handed to:

Kizzme - Hare for a sensationally artistic run
Procol - a magnificent 700 runs - congratulations!
Chris - Virgin Hasher
Treadie - Visitor from Border HHH

Another great hashing night at the Tatts Hotel - Many Thanks to Hare Kissme!

Live Hare - Impulse (Garry)

Wasn't it great to walk and run about in the warm evening air?  It was like we had woken from hibernation, warm, refreshed and eager to go.  The approaching new season literally put a spring in our step.

What also kept us hopping was the gathering storm, complete with lightning and thunder claps.  Fortunately, we all outraced the rain.  It was when we were all safely inside the Goonellabah Tavern that the clouds opened up and down it pelted.  Phew!

Earlier in the week it looked likely that we would all be trailing around hareless but hirsute Impulse stepped in at the last minute and prepared the hash trail.  Thankyou Impulse for the extra effort and strength to withstand the inevitable backlash.  Our live hare was careful to stay well ahead of the pack.  Tradition has it, if the live hare is caught, their pants are pulled down.  This would have left Impulse appropriately in his birthday suit.  Yes, it was his birthday last week.  It's a shame he wasn't caught - we could have amused ourselves with that story for years to come!

Welcome back Plugger and Goanna.  After travelling thousands of kilometres across Australia over a period of several weeks, did they go home and have a hot shower and sleep in their comfy bed?  No.  They got their priorities right and came straight to hash.  They are hashers through and through.

Aunty Lush led off the large group of walkers with a little help from Kirklands.  Hootu, with his bus driver know-how, internally mapped out a route which brought everyone back to hash home in near perfect time.

All harriers had to cross the busy main road en masse.  It was dark, it was peak traffic time, there was no pedestrian crossing and there were headlights in our eyes.  One lone car approaching prompted a few false starts.  After all, it was unlikely that one car could run us all over.  It was a case of "Follow me, I'm right behind you."

This run had it all - hills, on-backs, long distances between arrows, arrows that couldn't be found.  Runners had to spread out, adding extra kilometres to the trail, while calling out across the nightscape.  It became increasingly frustrating.  At the bottom of a hill, facing an on-back, I needed reassurance that we were enjoying ourselves.  I was assured we were.  Good.  Upon winding our way up to the highway once more, we made a fast dash to hash house home.  That was a good tough run.

It was a big, noisy group that enjoyed the nosh at Goonellabah Tavern.  Kissme and Upcycler were the only two bothering to participate in the photo.

[nrhhh] Hash 17th August

Next Run - (no. 1570)
When - Monday 24th August 2015 6 p.m.
Where - Goonellabah Tavern, Bruxner Hwy Goonellabah
Live Hare

Last Run - (No. 1569)
When - Monday 17th August 2015
Where - Pioneer Tavern, Wollongbar
Hares - Lost With Space and Space Cowboy

It was a relatively small group which gathered at the Pioneer Tavern Wollongbar.  It seems we are all taking turns in battling the lurgy this winter.  Some might be greedily having more turns than others though. Even so, the usual fun was had out on the streets of Wollongbar on a mild night barely lit by a crescent moon.

Hare, List With Space, lead the walkers off, map held tightly and referred to often.  A few pauses were necessary for orientation on such a dark night.  Wollongbar, having less hills than Alstonville, Goonellabah and even some parts of Lismore, tends to be easier on the legs.  Conversation was robust.

There once were hashers out for a walk
Their task was to follow the chalk
Wearing lights on their feet
They got lost in the street
It seems they did nothing but talk

Hare, Space Cowboy, had gone out earlier to set the course.  He didn't turn up to see the result of his efforts.  Possibly he was scared off by the hashers' poor habit of dissing hares.  Since he missed it, we will do it now - There was a looong way between some of those arrows!  This had the runners unusually dazed and confused and doing a lot of backtracking.

The three runners were greatly outnumbered by walkers.  Polarised, experiencing one of her runner's highs, visualised us as three little pigs huffing and puffing all the way to hash home.  All was going welll until a park had the runners scurrying in three directions looking for toilet paper, only to converge on the other side directionless (because the next arrow wasn't anywhere to be seen).  I think at this stage we were more like three blind mice.  You've never seen such a thing in your life.  It is times like these that Procol and Hash Brown are missed with their extra sensory direction perception.

Runners have stumbled upon a secret.  When not sure which way to turn - Stop. Listen. Be very quiet.  The distant cackle of the walkers can be heard!  On on we go towards that familiar and reassuring sound.

Back at the tavern, we became a small, yet well-fed group with large meals enjoyed by all.

Thankyou to hares, Lost With Space and Space Cowboy for a well thought out trail with clear arrows (when we could find them - but there'll be no more dissing).

[nrhhh] Next NRHHH run Monday 17th August

Next Run - (No. 1569)
When -  Monday 17th August 2015  6pm
Where - Pioneer Tavern,  Simpson Avenue , Wollongbar
Hare - Lost With Space (Sue) and Space Cowboy (Steve)

Last Run - (No. 1568)
When -  Monday 10th August 2015
Where - 15 South Street, Alstonville
Hare - Miss Took (Rosi)

Yet another spectacular Northern Rivers winter evening was provided for our NRHHH run this week, it was even rumoured that a meteor shower was expected but no one seemed to give it a 2nd thought as we headed off on the "Detour" of Alstonville.

The walkers seemed to have bred in numbers somewhat over the past few years, is this a sign of an ageing hash group?  Are we all falling apart ?  Is there a discount for a bulk purchase of zimmer frames so we can keep up with Ballina Hash?

A grand total of 3 runners were lead off by Procol (Gary M) followed closely for a few minutes by Polarised (Narina) and Sore Gaps (Jordyn). (It is almost certain the average age of that running group was somewhat less than the walkers.)   At some stage not far out from Hash Home, Sore Gaps either lost the others or they lost him, that is yet to be determined, but all ended up safely back home, blaming each other for the mis-directions.  As Sore Gaps was the most vocal about he earned the "spit the dummy" award for the night.

The walkers in their vast numbers were led of at a break neck pace by Hash Brown (Peter), who sporting a bandaged leg still managed to crack a 4 minute mile pace.  The group was held together for sometime until two of us had to answer the call of nature and dropped off the back only to find the pack waiting for us up the road.  They weren't hard to miss grouped at the end of the street with their flashing paraphernalia reminiscent of a Discotheque.

Back at Hash Home, Slurr (Fay D) took over the duties of the hash Circle and got our hareess Mistook (Rosi) and co-hare (again) Hash Brown up for the Down Downs.   Mrs Mistook (Rosi's Mum) entertained us again with a new joke delivered in her own delightful manner - thank you!   Scrambled Eggs (Greg) and Bituman (Patrick) also provided jokes, with Bitumen almost evicted on the spot for his terribly punny effort.

Mistook catered for all of Alstonville including the vegetarians and and GF among us with delicious soups and fresh breads followed by some devilishly delicious chocolate cake.     Fantastic Hash grub !

Thanks Mistook and Hash Brown for the great night.
